Learning how to self hospital in the online game Torn is important for a number of reasons. Chances are you need to keep yourself from getting attacked by other players and this is one great way to do so. However, we still have some tips and tricks for those of you that may not be able to self-hospitalize.
While some players will fail crimes as an alternative, this is can be frowned upon because you’ll lose crime experience. Therefore, the more popular method requires learning the BIO2127: Intravenous Therapy education course. But, if you’re a new player, you may have to wait a while.
How to Self Hospital in Online Game Torn
Taking Advantage of Blood Bags
If you already have the BIO2127: Intravenous Therapy education course, you’re in a good spot. For those of you that don’t, you’ll need to take the BIO1340: Introduction to Biochemistry course first. Afterward, you can take BIO2127. Some players make the mistake of thinking that they need to learn every course up to BIO2127. But this isn’t the case.
Once you’ve learned both courses, you’ll need to learn what your blood type is in Torn. This is so you can find out what blood types your character is compatible with. Because oddly enough, we want to find out which ones you aren’t compatible with.

The main trick to learning what your blood type is in Torn is by using an Empty Blood Bag. This will give you a Blood Bag of your type making it easy to find out. Although, if you use one in your faction’s armory, your type will add to the armory stockpile.
Once you know what your blood type is in Torn, you can take a look at our blood type chart further down. This chart shows which blood type is compatible with which so you know what to use for your situation. It all depends on whether you’re trying to recover health or self hospital.
Before you can use a blood bag, you’ll need to be missing some health unless you’re already in the hospital. This can be frustrating if you’re in a hurry and need to lose health somehow. One quick method is by using an Empty Blood Bag. Regardless, if you want to self-hospitalize, you’ll need to use a type you’re not compatible with.
Once you do, you’ll immediately get sent to the Torn City hospital for 90 minutes. Even though you can’t stack for longer than 90 minutes, you can use another one while in the hospital as your time begins to run out. This is a good trick for staying in if you’re not ready to hop out.
Receiving a Surprise in the Mail
This is another method to self-hosp in this online game, despite it being much more expensive. While a blood bag can cost around $20,000, a Small Explosive Device (SED) item in Torn can cost several million. By opening this surprise present in a parcel, you’ll immediately get sent to the hospital.
Even though they’re an expensive way to self-hospitalize, it can be worth it for the five hours worth of time inside. This is an okay method if you’re trying to sleep during a faction ranked war. But, further down in our section on what to do if you can’t self-hospitalize, there is another trick for a similar amount of time.
Failing a Crime to Self-Hosp
We mentioned this method briefly in the intro for those of you that are running out of options. As long as you have 15 Nerve, you can try the Kidnapping -> Undercover Cop crime. Before doing so, make sure you don’t have $50,000 on you if you want to visit the hospital on failing. Otherwise, having $50,000 will prevent you from going to the hospital.
Despite losing crime experience for failing this crime, some players like it because it gives you around eight hours in the hospital. This is the longest hospital stay you can get mentioned in this Torn guide.
Compatible Blood Types in Torn and Real Life
The top row represents the donor’s blood type while the left column represents the receiving blood type. For example, if you’re AB+, you can receive every blood type in this chart. Or if you’re A-, you can only receive O- and A-.
The main dilemma for Torn players with the AB+ blood type is that they aren’t incompatible with any. Therefore, the only type they can take to self-hospitalize is Irradiated. And this also provides the negative debuff, radiation sickness, lowering your stats.

Using Ipecac Syrup to Self-Hosp
The patch notes for Patch #322 posted on January 16, 2024, revealed Ipecac Syrup as a new way for players to self-hosp. The primary reason for this new item is to help those with AB+ blood that aren’t compatible with other blood types. It provides a similar purpose for a hospital time of 60 to 90 minutes, with a 30-minute medical cooldown.
What to Do If You Can’t Self-Hospital in Torn
If you don’t have a way to put yourself in the Torn City hospital, there are still a few tricks you can take advantage of. Take a quick look at the bullet points below for unique methods:
- If you’re at level 15 or higher, you can fly to other countries. During your flight, players can’t attack you but you can’t do much either. The longest flight is to South Africa via a Standard flight for around five hours.
- Get another player to put a bounty or several on you. There isn’t a guarantee another player will take it, but the higher the reward is, the higher the chance.
- Factions in ranked wars will sometimes hire mercenaries to put players in the hospital. This can be expensive, but reliable if they’re quick.
- The Russian Foot Roulette Torn game provides a small amount of hospital time if you lose. This can be useful for trading.
That’s all there is to this in-depth guide on how to self hospital/self-hosp in the online game Torn. There are a variety of reasons to want to do this and it certainly helps to know every trick. Especially since not every option is always available to you. The last thing you want is to need to use a blood bag and have your medical cooldown maxed out.
